Is lullaby essential in baby's growthBabies are very fussy at times when feeling sleepy and they keep crying non stop . You will not be able to pacify the baby. Here is an very old soothing method that will calm your baby and will enable her to fall asleep. Lullaby is the solution for your crying baby.

Lullabies are loved by little ones. Lullabies are rhymed and harmonious words. Lullabies are sung by the mother of the baby generally to put the baby to sleep. Lullaby is a tradition in our culture and it has been handed over to each parent through generations. Lullabies are usually sung in their mother tongue. In joint families baby gets to hear lullabies from grandparents, elderly relatives, aunts, uncles at home apart from parents.

You can develop rapport with your baby by singing lullaby while the baby is feeling sleepy. You need not worry about the lyrics of the song, the tune or if the song is sung with sruthi…off tune in melody. You may have forgotten a few words, never mind, keep humming to fill the gap. You can make it a practice to sing different popular songs you may have hard in your childhood.

Lullabies are known as lory in Hindi, Lali pata in Telugu, tharatu patta in Malayalam. Just to recollect the famous ones depicted in movies are:

In Hindi : Chanda hai tu, mera suraj hai tu….

In Telugu: Lali…lali…lali…lali

In malayalam: aararo…aarariro…. These songs are full of melody and pleasant feeling.

Lullabies are sung all over the world in local languages and styles of singing. The folk songs are good to hear with simple words that is easy to learn too. The cosmopolitan culture and advanced technology are changing the styles of lullabies. The pleasant music is replaced with rap songs and high music. You can pick a CD from your nearest music store for the ideal songs your baby would enjoy to hear and soothe her down.

The lullaby reflects the taste of the mother. Lullabies built a communication pattern between mother and child. The baby’s responses, identification and perception process increases.  Baby reflexes like hearing, seeing- eye contact and even responding to the voices is clearly seen.  As the baby is held close or the parent holds the arm, the body postures convey warmth and love to the baby. The bond between child and family is strengthened.

Lullabies are infact the first interactive medium of communication with mother and child. Babies slowly start showing preferences to songs. They identify the voice , words gradually and smile, laugh and within a few minutes are fast asleep. Funny to see the pattern develop in a baby.

The advantages of lullabies for babies are:

    • Soothes crying children to make them sleep.
    • Directs baby with the tone of mother’s voice.
    • When babies are afraid of sudden movements and sudden voices their blood pressure and heartbeats rise immediately. Lullaby draws this high blood pressure suffered by children into a normal level and this is achieved in a very short time.

  • The child grown hearing lullabies have a much healthier kind of communication with the mother.
  • Baby grasps words quickly and will be able to  repeat them as they are growing up.
  • The baby identifies nature – moon, rain, voices of birds and animals as these are the common lyrics of lullabies.

As most mothers are working they do not find the time to sing a lullaby or are so tied up in their schedules, mobiles that they prefer to switch on the music system for convenience. You can make an effort to chip in with your vice such that the baby realizes that mama is near.

You can make a start even now as the baby can take lullabies as she is growing up. Maximize the benefits of lullabies and keep the age old tradition alive

ear infection for a newborn babyEar infection is an experience every newborn baby may have had in the growing stages. Ear infection is very painful bringing both the baby and the parents under tremendous worry and sleepless night. You can understand why it occurs and what are the symptoms associated with ear infection. Breast fed babies are less prone to ear infections than a bottle feeding baby.

What is an Ear infection?

An ear infection typically affects your baby’s middle ear. These infections can be quite painful and often develop a few days after the onset of a cold. Basically, fluid builds up in a small pocket behind the eardrum. This fluid buildup is caused by germs and bacteria which get into the ear. The eustachian tubes, which form a passage from your ear to your throat, are very small in newborn babies, and they have a more difficult time blocking bacteria. Refer the picture for further understanding.  As the baby grows, so do their eustachian tubes, and they generally have less ear infections, although this may not always be the case.

ear infection for a newborn babyEar infections are associated with fever in some babies. Ear infections are not contagious.

What are the symptoms of ear infection?

You should carry your baby after washing the hands thoroughly.

  • Your child will be restless and often will be tugging and pulling the ear.
  • Your child may be having fever and will be crying with pain.
  • You may observe pus or blood from your baby’s ear
  • It may be some sticky substance oozing out of the ear.
  • The secretion from ear may also smell bad.
  • Baby will refuse feeds both bottle and breast feed as the baby experience pain upon sucking. The jaw movement will increase the pain.

Now baby is hungry and having ear pain too. You will hear louder non stop crying. You need to consult a doctor as you cannot see her crying with pain and not going easy with milk intake.

When to consult the doctor?

When your baby is becoming fussier and crying a lot you need to take the baby to the Doctor. The Doctor basis diagnosis may prescribe for antibiotics and ear drops. The eardrops and medication will address the pain and minimize the infection gradually.

Baby also becomes active when the pain is subsides and will accept feeds quickly.

Home remedies:

Place a cloth pad dipped in warm water. Squeeze it and place it near the baby’s ear. The warm compress gives relief for 15 to 20 minutes. Repeat this process. The baby will also sense the parents attention and the mother’s warmth and will be quiet. It is a type of massage and soothes the baby.

1 to 2 drops of warm olive oil or coconut oil can be placed in each ear. Oil should be warm enough that the baby can bear the temperature. Remember baby’s skin is delicate and therefore need gentle handling.

2 drops of warm garlic oil can be put into each ear.

Should we go in for medication over the counter

It is recommended by Medical practitioners and Pediatricians that we need to wait for 2 to 3 days for natural curing. The bacteria inside the ear will build resistance to the medicine and later on they will not be very effective. You will have to go in for higher dosage to address the ear infection.

Precautionary methods:

Watch out newborn baby’s ears for any dirt or sticky excretions. Prevent baby from cold and fever. When you go out of the home properly cover ears to prevent cold breeze affecting ears.

Do not allow water to enter the ear during bathing process. Wipe the ear externally with Baby ear buds. Do this when baby is asleep. Check baby’s ear with a pen torch for better viewing.

You need not become worried and depressed about your child’s condition. Assure the baby with your nearness and kisses and I’m sure he will sense your attention and recover quickly.

Baby is fed with formula when breast milk is insufficient or to manage the frequency when mother is out for work or an errand.

Use boiled water for mixing formulas this will ensure your baby does not get infections and is healthy. Continue this practice as long as you are using a bottle for feeding. Need to be cautious on healthy hygienic practices.

Babies will not wait when they are hungry. They will cry loud such that the neighbours also will realize the presence of the baby.

Procedure to mix formula milk:

Wash your hands Always read the label instructions mentioned on the formula pack. Boil water in a clean vessel. Let it simmer for 3 to 5 minutes extra. Then leave the vessel for cooling until lukewarm. Now transfer the water into a feeding bottle which is clean and sterilized. Dispense the formula powder into the feeding bottle that has water.  Tighten the nipple and cap of the bottle. Shake the bottle thoroughly.

Check for any lumps in the bottle, it will prevent flow of milk.

You can store boiled water in a flask sufficient for the next feed to avoid being away from the kid for long. You can plan for the night feed in this manner.

Water is the main source for bacterial contamination and as babies are very delicate they are infected quickly. It is a painful process for both mother and child therefore follow hygiene practices.

Check for the right temperature:

Check for the temperature of baby formula prior to feeding the baby. Sprinkle some milk from the bottle nipple onto the inner side of your wrist. It should not feel hot on your skin upon contact , you should feel similar to body temperature, not too hot that the baby will be affected.

How long can we store the formula milk:

It is recommended to use the mixed formula milk in an hour’s time. If the external weather is cold, it is advisable to warm the milk and then feed the baby. Do not serve left over milk beyond recommended duration, it may grow bacteria and your child may fall sick.

Heating the baby formula:

You can lightly heat mixed baby formula in the microwave too, use a separate clean vessel for that purpose. If the milk is too warm and the baby is shrieking with hunger, immerse the vessel partially into a bucket of regular water. This will bring down the temperature and you can feed the baby quickly.

Caution while dispensing baby formula:

  • Use the scoop as supplied in the baby formula pack.dispensing and preparing baby formula
  • Do not heap the scoop while dispensing baby formula  Fill up to the scoop tip only.
  • Do not compress the baby formula in the spoon . Normally dip and scoop out quantity.
  • Follow right dilution of baby formula. Adding more water to the dispensed quantity is unhealthy as adding more baby formula to the water. This may cause indigestion, constipation and your baby may have colic problems.
  • At all times follow manufacturer’s instructions mentioned on the pack. Read label,  check for product expiry etc while purchasing baby formula.
